Generally your auto insurance does not cover you or your vehicle while you are traveling in Mexico, but this is not always the case! As people plan their spring and summer travels, you should consider your automobile insurance if you are going to be driving in Mexico or abroad.
To find out whether you will be covered while driving in
another country, you would need to check the “covered territory” section of
your insurance policy. Generally, you
will be covered by your auto insurance in all fifty states and US
Territories. While many insurance
carriers cover you while driving in Canada, most do not cover you while driving
in Mexico. When you will be driving in
Mexico, you should shop for and purchase car insurance for Mexico. There are many companies that offer car
insurance for Mexico and you should consult with a broker about purchasing an
insurance policy while you are in Mexico.
Many policies are sold online.
Some insurance carriers do offer coverage (or limited
coverage) with your regular policy in Mexico, but there are limitations. For example, some insurance carriers continue
your coverage when you are within seventy-five miles of the boarder and for a maximum
of ten days. (For more information see: https://www.netquote.com/auto-insurance/driving-to-mexico-and-canada

If you have had a collision in Mexico, or if you were
injured in an automobile collision in Mexico, you may have coverage with a
Mexico policy and your regular automobile insurance policy. (Or possibly even a family member’s
automobile insurance in certain instances.)
You should speak with an experienced car accident lawyer if
you are involved in a collision in Mexico or Canada or ever injured in an
automobile accident. There are complex
coverage issues that arise from collisions in Mexico such as which policy is
applicable or primary, whether the benefits may be stacked (or both coverages
apply), which coverages you have and what the benefits may be.
I have been representing people injured in car accidents since
2001. I have helped many people injured
in car and even ATV collisions in the US and Mexico. I have made recoveries for passengers and
people who didn’t think they had automobile insurance and even on cases that
had been declined by other lawyers.
