The City of Phoenix to Tax Ride Share Pickups at Sky Harbor

-New Tax on Rideshare Pickups-

The City of Phoenix recently passed a tax on rideshare pickups (ie. Uber and Lyft) from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport!  But then reversed the tax to vote on the issue again in December!?

Phoenix City Council members voted 7 to 2 to charge a fee to all rideshares (Such as Uber and Lyft) rides to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on October 16, 2019.  The fee was to be $4.00 in 2020 and will increase $.25 annually.  (For more info see https://www.yourvalley.net/stories/phoenix-city-council-okays-new-fees-for-airport-rideshares,107255)

Travelers who already use Uber and Lyft already pay a fee of $2.66 to be picked up at the airport.  There is no fee for drop offs.  (For more info see https://www.azfamily.com/news/uber-lyft-fees-for-trips-to-from-phoenix-sky-harbor/article_7a5f5850-f06f-11e9-b98f-f360587106f4.html)

Airport officials say that rideshare now represents more than 70% of the commercial airport traffic.  (For more info see https://www.abc15.com/news/region-phoenix-metro/central-phoenix/airport-uber-lyft-rides-could-increase-with-new-proposed-fees)

The City Council then reversed their decision on procedural grounds stating that they would vote on the issue again at their meeting scheduled for December 18, 2019.  ( For more info see https://ktar.com/story/2810076/phoenix-to-vote-again-on-uber-lyft-airport-fee-because-of-procedural-error/) Stay tuned!  If you have an opinion on this issue, you can let the Phoenix City Counsel know.
